Go Veg Walk
As Gandhiji said, "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the ways its animals are treated". And India would not want to be judged by the treatment of chickens and cows raised and killed for food. The animals are confined in filthy sheds or Tabelas, and they are denied everything that's natural and important to them. Their slaughter is crude, terrifying and often painful, and they are sometimes dismembered while they are still conscious.
Eating animals is also bad for our health and the environment. Consumption of meat and other animal products has been conclusively linked to strokes, heart disease, diabetes, obesity and some types of cancer. And a recent UN report concluded that raising animals for food causes more of the greenhouse-gas emissions blamed for global warming than all the cars, trucks, trains, ships, and planes in the world combined.
On 30th september 2008 in Pune, Maharashtra, the march started at about 1 pm and carried it on for 45 min. Everyone wore animal masks, and many held placards with really humourous yet hard hitting punchlines like,"Are you a living grave?"So right from getting people into the GO VEG formation, to handing out t-shirts and soya milk packs, the team did a splendid job, with a 1000 watt smile!
All of this put together created a lot of curiosity for the onlookers (one volunteer knocked on the window of a car on the signal and asked him, "Are you vegetarian?" The guy said , "no!" So this guy screams to a group of volunteers, "idhar ghuma". All of them turned their placards and he started reading them. And in the end the volunteer said, "Get well soon!" smiled and walked off. The man in the car was thoroughly confused but managed to squeeze in a grin.
Around 400 people supported and walked in the GO VEG March. It was indeed a brilliant sight. PETA, our alliance, was overwhelmed with the response.
